Bio:

Hello everyone! My name is Rachel and I am a nursing instructor based in Victoria BC, Canada. I have a TEFL certification specializing in teaching young learners and teaching test preparation courses. I also have an Instructor Development Program Foundations certificate, which is a 100-hr course specialized in adult education. I believe in a student-centered approach - I would love to work with you to design learning plans that will increase your proficiency and confidence in English!

My teaching background:

I am an instructor teaching the Nursing and the Health Care Assistant program at a college. These programs attract a lot of ESL students, therefore on top of teaching the contents, I also helped ESL students to study the pronunciations and meaning of medical terminologies. I also volunteer at a local school for their after-school programs to tutor ESL students who just need an extra hand in their language learning journies. The majority of my students are adults, and the students I would tutor are between grade 1 - 12.

My background outside of teaching:

I was born and raised in Hong Kong and I moved to Canada about 10 years ago to pursue post-secondary education. Having lived in Hong Kong for half of my life, I also speak fluent Cantonese and Mandarin. I grew up in a big household with little sisters. We would read books and sing songs together when they were young to learn basic English. Nowadays, I live alone with my 2 kittens - Bean and Olive. They are troublemakers but I love them more than anything in the world. They might even pop by and say hello during our lessons! I love my job as an instructor, but I had always felt like I could do more to help especially ESL students to overcome any language barriers that might be in their way of achieving their goals. Being ESL myself, I understand the hardship and the challenges one might face. And I want to help in any way I could. That's why I decided to become a teacher on Langu.
